It’s February and I can feel it. I’m not talking about the snow, or the cold, or even Cupid. I’m talking about the race. Do you know what I mean? It’s February and you can feel the miles adding up, knowing the next mile marker is right over the horizon. Your energy from January is starting to wane and it’s sinking in that this is a marathon, not a sprint.
February isn’t for the faint of heart.
I know it, because I feel it too. After all these years of planning and success, February still hits me hard. That’s okay, folks. We are not machines. When we pressure ourselves to keep running hard and fast without reprieve, we’re setting ourselves up for failure because we are forgetting that we are human.
Depriving ourselves of the joy that comes from the race misses the point of running.
In the midst of checking off tasks and running from one appointment to another, it is so important to remember that the journey is just as important as the destination. The key to maintaining a steady pace is to ask yourself two questions:
- What do I need?
- Who do I need?
Do you need to delegate a task? Is it something as simple as having coffee with a friend? Do you need to fill a tub and soak in a few moments to yourself? The most successful people understand that nothing can be accomplished alone. I encourage my clients to have support systems in their lives that cultivate success. There are those that support goals, who I lovingly as a “dream team” (more on that to come); but there are also people who must be in place to help maintain your spirit, your joy, and your sanity. All of those people are essential, but it’s up to you to decide who and why.
I challenge you this week to create a list of people that can support your journey to success, and how they can help you maintain steadiness in your race. Feel free to contact me if I can be of any service to you, be it as a member of your team or a sounding board to figure out what that team looks like.
